Investigating the History of Routes, Commodities, Culture and Economic Interactions of Himalayan Region and Their Relevance in Contemporary India
Abstract
This paper examines the Himalayan region not as a barrier but as a vibrant corridor of transregional trade, cultural exchange, and economic interaction. By analysing key routes, traded commodities, religious flows, and economic transformations, it highlights the Himalayas’ centrality in linking South, Central, and East Asia. Drawing on archaeological, historical, and ethnographic evidence, the study also explores how geography, seasonality, and political regimes shaped mobility and socio-economic resilience. The paper concludes by assessing the contemporary relevance of these ancient networks in shaping regional infrastructure, diplomacy, and heritage consciousness in modern South Asia.
