Abstract

On Saturday 18 June 2022, in the early evening, a violent windstorm swept across the Côte Fleurie, east of the Baie de Seine, causing one death, five injured and material damage. Observations and simulations realized show that this windstorm was caused by the breaking of gravity waves associated with an atmospheric bore, which is the atmospheric equivalent of a tidal bore. The bore was formed by the intrusion and propagation of a density current within a stable marine boundary layer, generated by subsidence resulting from elevated convection. The presence of a strong low-level jet blowing in the opposite direction to the propagation of the bore, combined with a highly stable boundary layer, amplified the gravity waves until they broke. The most accurate simulations of the phenomenon, using physical models, are those with the highest effective resolution, demonstrating the value of continuing to improve them.
