Visualising Neurodivergent Thought Processes
Abstract
Yu-Lun Sung, a film lecturer at London South Bank University, partnered with DYSPLA, a neurodivergent artist-led community interest company (CIC), to create a desktop documentary illustrating neurodivergent thinking processes. This documentary invites viewers to experience flat screen interfaces uniquely, where desktop subjectivity, expressed through neurodivergent sensitivity, becomes a form of staged choreography—not merely a distortion of sound and image, but an externalisation of internal cognitive processes, reflecting the creator's journey in navigating and representing their experience within a neurotypical world via digital means. This collaboration produced two desktop documentaries. The first, created on September 13, 2021, did not follow desktop documentary conventions, while the second, produced on June 13, 2024, did. This statement focuses on the second version and analyses the work through the Image-Thinking framework proposed by Mieke Bal.
