Abstract

When compressed air is introduced into a liquid stream for two–phase flushing of pipeline systems and their elements, the phenomenon of water hammer can be observed - a dangerous phenomenon that destroys the walls of pipeline elements, causing noise, vibration and leading to disruption of the flow structure. The study of a water hammer in a two-phase flow makes it possible to provide measures to reduce negative consequences. The flow of a two-phase flow in the pipeline, when it is abruptly blocked, leads to an increase in impact pressure, which may result in a violation of the integrity of the pipeline. The development of a water hammer in a two-phase flow depends on the air content in the flow. When flushing ship systems with a pulsating two-phase flow, the air content is determined depending on the conditions for ensuring cavitation-free working conditions and lies in the operating range up to 25%. With these values of volumetric air content, it is important to determine the behavior of a two-phase medium and the possible development of a water hammer in industrial conditions. The authors revealed that the development of a water hammer in a two-phase flow is influenced by the initial pressure in the flow, the inner diameter of the pipe, the wall thickness of the pipe and the volume air content. It is established that the development of a water hammer becomes almost impossible with a volume air content of more than 50% due to the compressibility of the gas fractions in the mixture. A negative impact of a water hammer on the integrity of the pipeline with lower air contents in the range from 0 to 5% is possible. If the air volume content is more than 5%, the equivalent stresses in the pipe are significantly lower than the permissible ones.
