Abstract

Monitoring the behavior of marine equipment in various operating modes requires collecting data from multiple wireless sensors integrated into a WPAN. Wireless sensor networks are typically located adjacent to Wi-Fi networks, which are located in the same premises and use the same frequency band. This paper describes the operational characteristics of Bluetooth LE networks used to collect data from wireless sensors under interference from Wi-Fi devices. FHSS and AFH technologies designed to mitigate the impact of interference on Bluetooth networks are described. To evaluate their effectiveness, statistical modeling of packet transmission over a Bluetooth LE piconet exposed to interference from Wi-Fi devices was performed using MathCAD PRIME. Estimates were obtained for packet distribution across transmission channels, current and cumulative transmission coefficients, and the number of available Bluetooth LE channels when the piconet is subject to interference from one, two, and three Wi-Fi channels. Simulations have shown that using FHSS technology reduces the impact of interference on network operation, but only through pseudo-random transmission channel selection. AFH technology, based on tracking and subsequent use of low-interference channels, significantly reduces the impact of interference from Wi-Fi devices on Bluetooth LE network operation. Furthermore, the greater the frequency band occupied by interference from Wi-Fi devices, the faster the adaptation to the current interference environment. A disadvantage of AFH technology is the reduction in the number of transmission channels used, which reduces its immunity to interference from other sources.
