Abstract

The contribution presents a German description of the ,adventures ‘ of Morton Stanley, the English journalist and explorer of unknown African regions. The book written by Karl Burmann and published in 1880 is surely influenced by colonial desires typical of the ,Kaiserreich‘. However, it resists utilitarian pedagogical concepts and is therefore in consilience with Benjamin’s anti-pedagogical ideas that are typical for his collection of literature for children. Benjamin’s choice underlines the ambiguity of the colonial that could allow children und adolescents to escape form the constraints of their daily life.
