Abstract

An Early Warning System (EWS) is fundamentally a mechanism that alerts communities to potential disasters in a specific area. This crucial tool serves to detect and inform people about impending threats. The study was guided by three objectives, which included A) To assess the reach and accessibility of early warning messages disseminated through social media platforms, B) To examine the role of social media in enhancing public responsiveness to early warning messages, and C) To analyse the challenges and limitations associated with using social media for early warning dissemination. The study utilised a quantitative survey design to evaluate how effectively social media platforms distribute early warning messages targeting 138 participants. Data collection was conducted through an extensive and structured questionnaire, and Stata statistical software was used for data analysis. The study identified Facebook as the most frequently utilised platform for receiving early warning information, with 45 respondents (32.61%) indicating it as their primary source for such messages. Regarding accessibility, a significant portion of respondents, 58 individuals (42.03%), rated these early warning messages as "very accessible," suggesting that they find it easy to access the information shared on social media platforms. A linear regression analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between age and accessibility. The study recommends that emergency management organisations prioritise the utilisation of widely adopted social media platforms, such as Facebook and WhatsApp, for the dissemination of Early Warning Messages (EWMs). Additionally, a multi-platform strategy should be employed to extend their outreach.
