Abstract

This paper examines the operational aspects of the Silla Middle Period's labor conscription system by analyzing the (798). A re-examination of Ⅷ-⑤ and Ⅸ-③ interpreted that the Jeondaedeung(典大等) “mobilized” “1,000” Joyeok(助役). The term Beopgongbu (法功夫) is understood to refer to the standardized work quota for men. Joyeok are officially mobilized laborers, which are dispatched to regions to evenly balance labor. Moreover, due to the direct mobilization of manpower inherent in the labor conscription during that period, it is challenging to substantiate the presence of hired laborers. The substantial mobilization of personnel for public works is presumed to be attributable to the urgent or high-difficulty nature of the projects. Therefore, the labor service system of the Middle Silla period exhibited similarities with those of the Middle Ancient period, particularly in terms of direct labor collection. However, it established a highly systematized operational system through the codification and management of standardized labor quotas.
