Abstract

The article aims to broaden the understanding of the specificity of these texts as representatives of interpersonal academic communication, based on referential intertextuality and by studying the manifestations of intertextuality in freely available laudatio texts by representatives of the Latvian humanities. So far, the signs of intertextuality have been studied in primary scientific texts, such as articles (Griffig 2006), where a wide spectrum of these signs has been identified. Texts of interpersonal academic communication, represented here by laudatio texts, have not been studied in this context so far. The research corpus consists of 30 tribute texts published between 1997 and 2023, which are available online, dedicated to members of the humanities on significant anniversaries of their lives. In 77 % of the cases, the signs of intertextuality found in the texts selected for analysis are grouped, described and illustrated. The set of intertextual features found in the texts reflects the typical citation forms used in scientific articles. These include quotations from the jubilarian and colleagues, as well as paraphrases and references to relevant publications. These signs of intertextuality, common in literature, are interspersed with allusions and quotations from the person being celebrated themselves or from colleagues, as well as from oral communication situations and memory-based descriptions of situations, which also include quotations. In the context of the features analysed, the result is a compilation of texts that combine features of scholarly, popular scientific, and poetic styles. The quotations of the selected texts are often related to literary works, their authors and characters, which is partly explained by the jubilant’s affiliation with the humanities, including literary studies and folklore. In light of this, further research should focus on the juxtaposition and evaluation of laudatio texts dedicated to the humanities and natural sciences from the cultural perspective of the disciplines.
