Abstract

Lipids, such as fatty acids, cholesterol and phospholipids, play a key role in regulating cellular immunity and inflammatory responses via multiple mechanisms. They can play a dual role in the pathogenesis, progression, and prognosis of pulmonary infections by either promoting the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and exacerbating lung injury, or by suppressing inflammatory responses. This review summarizes alterations in lipid metabolism in patients with pulmonary infections, elucidates the mechanisms by which lipids contribute to pulmonary inflammation, and evaluates the prognostic value of lipid molecules. These findings may provide new perspectives for the treatment of pulmonary infections.
