Abstract

One of the most striking subcategories of the cryptocurrency market consists of assets commonly referred to as meme coins, which often emerge as internet jokes, humorous content, or community-driven initiatives. The price dynamics of these assets are largely shaped by social media influence, investor attention, community-based campaigns, and short-term speculative expectations rather than fundamental factors. Consequently, meme coins exhibit high volatility, experience extreme price fluctuations within short periods, and are prone to the formation of price bubbles. A price bubble is defined as a significant deviation of an asset’s market price from its fundamental value. This study analyzes the frequency of bubble formations in the daily price series of high–trading-volume meme coins—namely Dogecoin (DOGE), Shiba Inu (SHIB), Pepe (PEPE), Bonk (BONK), and Floki (FLOKI)—over the period from July 2023 to August 2025 by employing the Generalized Supremum Augmented Dickey–Fuller (GSADF) unit root test. In addition to meme coins, Bitcoin (BTC) is included in the analysis to strengthen the analytical framework and to empirically examine differences in bubble dynamics across cryptocurrency assets. The empirical findings indicate that no statistically significant price bubbles are observed in BTC and PEPE during the sample period, whereas DOGE, BONK, FLOKI, and SHIB exhibit statistically significant price bubbles in different quarters. Among the analyzed assets, DOGE and BONK display the highest frequency of bubble episodes. These results suggest that certain meme coins are more susceptible to speculative investor behavior and bubble formation compared to other cryptocurrencies.
