Abstract

This work was carried out within a research group (ALMARGEN) as part of an International Cooperation Project funded by the University of Jaén, Spain, in collaboration with the Technical University “Luis Vargas Torres”. Afro-rap, as an artivist proposal, was presented to UNESCO and won, representing Ecuador. Using a methodology based on art, life stories, and participant observation, hair is taken as the central axis to problematize poverty, power, and racism. The Cooperation Project aimed to create a shared academic artivist space between Jaén and Esmeraldas, imagining free bodies in colonized, racialized, impoverished, and vulnerable territories. Rap served as a tool for deterritorialization and displacement, allowing the UTLVTE proposal to become that novelty that defies explanation. Its transcendence and capacity for penetration proved more effective in the anti-racist struggle than dense conceptual content.
