History of Mathematics in the Cultural Heritage of Europe. Volume I: The Ancient World, Mathematics of Native Americas
Abstract
The first volume is devoted to the formation of mathematical thought in the earliest periods of human history. It examines the origins of counting and measurement in prehistoric times, the development of applied mathematics in the civilizations of Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, and the emergence of theoretical mathematics in Ancient Greece. A separate section is dedicated to the mathematical concepts of Native Americas, which provide an example of the independent and original development of mathematical ideas outside the European tradition. The volume combines a cultural-historical approach with an analysis of key mathematical concepts and concludes with a selection of topics for student research projects.
