History of Mathematics in the Cultural Heritage of Europe. Volume II: The Eastern Tradition
Abstract
The second volume covers the development of mathematics in China, India, and the Islamic world—cultural domains that played a decisive role in preserving, reinterpreting, and expanding the legacy of antiquity. The focus is placed on the formation of numeral systems, algebraic methods, trigonometry, astronomical calculations, and analytical approaches to problem-solving. The volume demonstrates how practical needs were combined with a high level of abstraction in Eastern mathematical traditions and how, through these cultures, mathematical knowledge was transmitted to Europe, laying the foundations for the subsequent development of European science.
