Abstract

The third volume is devoted to the evolution of mathematical thought in Europe from the Middle Ages to the seventeenth century. It traces the path from the reception of ancient and Eastern sources through the university tradition and the practical mathematics of the late Middle Ages to the scientific breakthroughs of the Renaissance. The volume concludes with an analysis of seventeenth-century mathematics - a period marked by the emergence of new methods, symbolic language, and an internally structured scientific system. It shows how mathematics gradually became an autonomous discipline with its own logic of development, shaping the subsequent history of science.
