Abstract

Abstract Spectra of some asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and red supergiant (RSG) stars show emission features at mid-infrared wavelengths, such as at 13 μ m, that have previously been inconclusively identified. We present models of dust emission seen in spectra of 3 oxygen-rich (O-rich) AGB stars and 1 RSG star. The models utilize the opacities of grains of amorphous silicates, amorphous alumina, corundum, and other polymorphs of alumina to fit the dust spectra. Corundum fits the 13 μ m feature, and other polymorphs of alumina plus amorphous alumina are required to fit the other characteristics of the spectra.
