Abstract

Abstract We have modeled H α equivalent width and Ca ii H & K S index measurements of disk-integrated sunlight during the 2023 October solar eclipse as measured by NEID using a one-free-parameter analytic model of the Sun, where the line is in absorption in the solar disk and in emission on the limb. We find the model to be in reasonable qualitative agreement with our data, and to explain the apparent strengthening of the absorption lines at beginning and end of eclipse. We suggest such a model might have utility in analyses of chromospheric lines in eclipsing binaries.
