Abstract

Abstract The weak line of Hg ii located at 5677.10 Å is used to measure the mercury abundance in the most massive component of the SB 2 HgMn star HD 1909 (AV Scl). This line, which absorbs about 5% of the adjacent continuum, is one of the strongest studied in this series. The synthesis of this line confirms a large overabundance of mercury, about +5.70 dex, which remains lower than the excess derived from the 3983.93 Å line in earlier studies but agrees well with the abundance I published in a recent Note. The synthesis of the 3983.93 Å line yields the same abundance. Both lines may be variable reflecting an inhomogeneous distribution of mercury over the surface of HD 1909.
