A UV Spectroscopic Analysis of VY Scl during the Deep Low State of 1983
Abstract
Abstract We focus on the archival UV Spectra of VY Scl obtained by the IUE spacecraft during the 1983 deep low state of the system. Calculations and UV modeling of the accretion disk and white dwarf (WD) in VY Scl is presented. We find that the accretion disk dominates the UV flux accounting for 64% of the UV flux. Despite the deep low state, considerable flux from the accretion disk remains and disk light dominates the UV light. In other VY Scl type nova-like, e.g., MV Lyrae and TT Ari, the WD accounts for ∼100% of the UV flux during their low states. Any significant disk truncation due to a magnetic accretor is absent.
