Showcasing innovation: a study of wine tourism practices in winery websites in the region of Melnik
Abstract
Innovation in wine tourism has become increasingly important as wineries seekto enhance visitor experiences, differentiate their offerings, and foster sustainability. This studyaims to explore the types of innovations adopted by tourism-hosting wineries in the Melnikregion of Bulgaria, focusing on product, digital, marketing, sustainable, and organizational innovations.Using content analysis, the websites of all 10 wineries in the region were examined, utilizing a predetermined coding framework based on previous research. The analysis revealsthat wineries place a strong emphasis on product innovations, particularly through events andculinary experiences, and demonstrate significant use of marketing innovations such as videocontent and storytelling. However, digital innovations, including virtual tours and personalizeddigital tools, are underutilized. In terms of sustainability, organic wine production is more common, while broader environmental initiatives are less prevalent. Wineries are highly engagedin regional collaboration, with all participating in tourism networks and the majority formingpartnerships with local businesses. The findings suggest that while the Melnik region’s wineries excel in marketing andcollaboration, there is room for further growth in areas such as digital transformation, culturalintegration, and sustainable practices. Future research could focus on evaluating theimpact of these innovations on visitor satisfaction and business performance, as well asinvestigating the barriers to adopting advanced digital tools and sustainability measuresin wine tourism.
