Abstract

The present study approaches the phonological evolution of the French lexical-derived Creoles of the Caribbean. It does so by comparing the present day synchronic system in Guadeloupean to the findings in the literary texts written in old Creoles. Looking back at the diachronic evolution, the postulate that will be at stake throughout this text is that the thinning of postvocalic R at the end of Creole words of French origin has been the phenomenon that released the vocalic phonological systems of those Creole languages.
