Abstract

This paper investigates the verbal system of French Guianese Creole before the language was affected by the many linguistic influences that arose after 1900 from immigration and greater contact with Standard French. The diachronic study of the Creole, which emerged in about 1700, is based on an extensive corpus of texts, mostly from the nineteenth century, and finds that the modern tense-mood-aspect system is the result of centuries of evolution. Verbal morphemes began as auxiliaries and did not coalesce into a formal system until the early twentieth century.
