Abstract

This paper studies the expressions of degree in Haitian Creole. We consider the expressions in the diachronic (18th and 19th centuries) and synchronic levels. We examine them according the semantic classification of Gaatone (2008) namely: measure of degree, comparison of degree, (non)-conformity of degree, emphasis of degree. This analysis also looks the combinatorial restrictions that the expressions impose in relation to the grammatical category of major class (adjective, adverb, verb and noun).
