Threading the Clinical Needle: A Case Study and Discussion on Use of Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists (GLP-1 RAs) in Older Adults With Mood Disorders
Abstract
The treatment of older adults with mood disorders requires careful management of medication-related adverse effects, drug-drug interactions, and ongoing close monitoring to reduce risk of complications. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), initially developed for diabetes management, are now widely used for weight management and reduction of cardiovascular risks. Emerging evidence also suggests a potential role for these agents in psychiatry through mechanisms implicated in mood and other psychiatric disorders. However, the expanding use of GLP-1 RAs in older individuals introduces important clinical considerations, including tolerability, side effects, nutritional concerns, and interactions with psychotropic medications. This case report and accompanying discussion highlights the need for expert guidance, and provides a practical framework to support safe and clinically informed use of GLP-1 RAs in older psychiatric populations.
