The Swiss study transport’45 with insights on capacity and reliability
Abstract
The keynote presents selected findings from Transport 2045, a Swiss expert study commissioned to assess and prioritise major road, rail and urban transport projects to support the development of Switzerland’s transport system up to 2045. The study covered around 500 projects with a total volume of approximately CHF 113 billion and applied a cross-modal, multidimensional assessment approach. The keynote focuses in particular on capacity and reliability in railway transport. Using specific examples, the presentation illustrates the effects of infrastructure measures, technological solutions and operational changes on capacity, stability and punctuality. The findings show that both targeted infrastructure expansion and technological solutions can be necessary, and that one-sided optimisation can lead to undesirable effects in other areas. The presentation therefore highlights the importance of a holistic assessment of benefits, costs, capacity and reliability, as well as the need to consider infrastructure and technological measures jointly.
