Abstract

ABSTRACT Rapid urbanization, economic growth, climate characteristics, increasing appliance ownership, and technological advancements contribute to rising residential energy consumption (REC), emphasizing the need for improved energy efficiency measures. In India, residential buildings account for 22% of total electricity consumption, with space cooling needs contributing to about one third of this consumption. This research focuses on enhancing energy efficiency in residential building, specifically addressing the tropical wet and dry climate of Nagpur, India. The comprehensive literature review establishes the contextual relevance of the study, identifying eight parameters crucial for energy efficiency in residential buildings. The methodology involves a detailed individual parametric analysis of selected building parameters: wall height, orientation, neighboring buildings, roof material, roof type, window-to-wall ratio (WWR), window material, and overhangs. Individual parametric analyses are followed by a combined parametric analysis using optimum inputs obtained from the individual analyses. The results show the significance of each parameter, revealing substantial potential for reductions in energy consumption through cumulative optimization. The study utilizes BEopt software along with EnergyPlus plugin interface for simulations, showcasing a noteworthy 14.9% reduction in energy consumption through the combined optimization of building parameters. This research contributes significantly to the field of sustainable building design by offering an in-depth knowledge of the complex relationship between building parameters and energy efficiency. The methodology and findings can be extended to guide energy-efficient building practices in both similar & different climatic zones, aligning with the global imperative for sustainable and environmentally responsible buildings.
