Abstract

Summary The Khuff Formation (Permian Age) is considered one of the hydrocarbon bearing reservoirs in Kuwait. Detailed qualitative petrography analysis by using selected drill cuttings from one of the drilled wells in Burgan oil field targeted Khuff formation has been applied and revealed that five carbonate lithofacies types are identified include: dolomudstone, oolitic/peloidal dolopackstone/dolograinstone, dolomitic mudstone, algal grainstone and evaporites “gypsum/anhydrite”. The facies sequences could have suggested the deposition in inner carbonate ramp including fluctuation from shoal, back shoal to lagoon, tidal flat and ended regression cycle by evaporites deposited in supratidal/Sabkha settings. The reservoir quality varies from very poor to good, and is effected by different diagenetic processes which include micritisation, dolomitisation, recrystallisation, compaction, dissolution and authigenic minerals.
