Abstract

The article proposes avenues for teacher training in the field of French spelling. It presents a well-argued summary of scientifically based research to support spelling teaching practices. It then describes the properties of the French writing system and its spelling rules and analyzes its linguistic and cognitive complexity. It continues with a critical analysis of learning materials (past and present), showing that issues such as homophony/heterography are often dealt with in a partial and inconsistent manner. Ultimately, the study defends an inductive approach that clarifies students’ knowledge and reasoning, helping them to identify, analyze and correct their spelling errors.
