Abstract

Generative AI systems are fast changing the research, industry and society. These systems are used to generate new content, decisions and knowledge with minimum human involvement. This possibility brings to the fore serious ethical issues. This chapter explores some of the most important ethical aspects of the establishment and application of generative AI. Its interests lie in areas like prejudice, openness, responsibility, confidentiality and abuse. The chapter brings out the uncertainty surrounding the model behaviour, outcome, and long term social impact. It talks about the inadequacy of the current ethical frameworks in generative systems. Another concept that is discussed in the chapter is responsible innovation as a guiding technique. Responsible innovation focuses on foresight, human control and inclusive governance. The risks may be mitigated by incorporating ethical thinking in design and deployment. The chapter also intends to guide the researchers, developers, and policymakers to make informed and ethical decisions in the face of uncertainty.
