Abstract

Agentic AI systems can engage in meaningful human-like interactions, are autonomous and context-aware, automate processes, and present goal-oriented behaviors. They initiate actions based on their goals, state, and knowledge, and make informed decisions using data, contextual information, and environmental cues with limited intervention and supervision. They are designed to adapt to their environment, may demonstrate sophisticated reasoning capabilities, and act proactively with a sense of agency, autonomy, intentionality, and rationality. The chapter results reveal that agentic AI can reshape educational structure and roles with the co-presence of education stakeholders and AI tools becoming integral to teaching and learning. Agentic AI marks a conceptual and practical shift of the role of AI in education as it emphasizes the creation of collaborative, adaptive, and intelligent systems that act as partners with shared agency. Agentic AI can impact the affective, cognitive, and social dimensions of learning and create engaging, effective, and personalized educational experiences.
