Abstract

Artificial intelligence is quietly reshaping special education—not by replacing human support, but by enhancing its reach and responsiveness. This chapter explores how AI tools can offer deeply individualized learning experiences, particularly for students with cognitive, behavioral, and sensory challenges. Far from a one-size-fits-all model, these technologies adjust in real time to the learner's pace, preferences, and needs. Yet the future of AI in special education is not without complexity. Issues of ethics, equity, and emotional nuance cannot be programmed away. Drawing on current innovations and emerging practices, this chapter examines how educators and AI systems might work together—not in competition—to create classrooms where every student feels seen, supported, and empowered. The aim is not perfection through technology, but better human understanding, made possible by it.
