Abstract

The integration of wind energy into electrical grids is essential for a sustainable energy future and relies on advanced power electronic converters. These converters provide the interface between variable-speed wind turbines and modern grid requirements. This chapter examines power converter topologies and control strategies for wind energy systems, outlining the transition from early fixed-speed turbines to fully rated converter-based designs used in today's multi-megawatt installations. It reviews key converter architectures, including two-level and three-level Neutral-Point Clamped (NPC) Voltage Source Converters (VSCs), and highlights the emerging use of modular multilevel converters (MMCs) in high-power applications. The chapter also discusses control strategies for machine-side and grid-side converters, covering maximum power point tracking (MPPT), vector control, fault ride-through capability, reactive power support, and power quality considerations, emphasizing the role of power converters in reliable grid integration.
