Abstract

The concept of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the educational process due to the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence to create adaptive learning experiences that scale personalized instruction. The chapter explores the theoretical underpinning, architecture, and adaption of AI-based learning systems, such as learner modeling, content adaptation, and continuous assessment. Although these technologies offer better learning results and instructional performance, their data-driven and algorithmic character serve as a major source of ethical concerns. The chapter critically examines the problems of bias, fairness, privacy and surveillance throughout the lifecycle of adaptive learning systems. It also talks about the importance of explainable AI in promoting transparency, trust, and responsible human-AI cooperation in education. Using both empirical and practical examples, the chapter suggests a combined ethical risk-reduction framework that balances technical innovation and ethical governance.
