Abstract

The rapid proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) in online communication is reshaping how information is created, disseminated, and consumed. From personalized chatbots to AI-generated content and deepfake videos, these technologies are not only transforming engagement but also challenging our ability to discern truth from fabrication. This chapter explores the intersection of AI and consumer neuroscience in the context of manipulation, examining how AI leverages subconscious human processes to influence perceptions and decisions. The chapter delves into the psychological mechanisms that make individuals susceptible to manipulative messages, such as trust, fear, and cognitive biases. By integrating insights from neuroscience, it uncovers the subconscious drivers of behavior, providing a deeper understanding of how AI technologies can either empower or exploit individuals. The chapter also highlights the ethical challenges posed by AI-driven manipulation, advocating for accountability and safeguards in AI development to minimize harm and ensure transparency.
