Abstract

This mixed-methods study examines how youth migration affects the well-being of elderly parents in Kerala. Quantitative data from 72 participants using the WHO-5 and WHOQOL-BREF scales showed reduced psychological and social well-being, while qualitative interviews with five parents revealed underlying experiences of loneliness, identity loss, and shifting family roles. Integrating both strands highlighted how emotional strain persists despite financial stability provided through remittances. Positive feelings of pride and improved living conditions also emerged, reflecting the dual nature of migration's impact. Findings emphasize the need for community-based mental health support, stronger local governance responses, and digital inclusion initiatives for older adults. The study underscores the importance of balanced, context-specific policies to address the emotional and social challenges faced by the elderly in migrant-sending regions.
