Integrative Pathways to Longevity
Abstract
This chapter explores how integrative medicine (IM)—encompassing conventional healthcare, complementary therapies, and lifestyle interventions—can promote successful ageing in resource-constrained neighborhoods. Against the backdrop of global crises such as climate change, economic instability, and health inequities, older adults in underserved communities face compounded vulnerabilities. Drawing on theories of successful ageing, social ecology, and resilience, the chapter examines how sustainable neighborhood resources—gardens, community centers, faith groups, intergenerational networks—can be aligned with IM practices to foster physical, mental, and social well-being. Case studies, policy perspectives, and practical frameworks are discussed to highlight how integrative approaches can transform scarcity into strength. The chapter proposes actionable strategies for practitioners, policymakers, and community stakeholders to embed IM into neighborhood-level interventions, advancing equity and sustainability in ageing populations.
