Urban Analytics for Smart Cities Bridging the Gap Between Real-Time Data and Sustainable Urban Development
Abstract
Urbanization is one of the most significant global trends of the 21st century, with nearly 70% of the world's population projected to live in cities by 2050. This rapid urban growth presents critical challenges, including housing shortages, inadequate mobility infrastructure, escalating energy demands, and strained waste management systems. Despite advancements in urban analytics and smart city technologies, there remains a gap in integrating real-time data-driven solutions to address these multifaceted issues effectively. This study aims to bridge this gap by exploring how urban analytics can optimize resource allocation, enhance sustainability, and improve livability in urban environments. Using machine learning (ML) models, such as LightGBM, we analyzed diverse datasets—including air quality metrics, traffic patterns, and social media sentiment—to predict urban challenges like congestion, pollution, and energy demand. Our findings 1-1 demonstrate that ML models achieve high predictive accuracy, with Light-GBM outperforming other algorithms, achieving an RMSE of 3.25 and an R2 score of 0.88 in traffic congestion predictions. Feature importance analysis revealed that population density and PM2.5 levels were key predictors of urban challenges. The implications of this research are profound: it highlights the potential of urban analytics to inform proactive policymaking, optimize infrastructure investments, and align urban development with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11. By leveraging advanced analytics, cities can transition toward smarter, more sustainable futures, ensuring equitable, resilient, and livable urban environments for growing populations.
