Psychological Drivers of Higher Education Choices
Abstract
In an age of growing competition and institutional differentiation, the choice to pursue higher education is no longer guided solely by academic prestige or job prospects. Instead, it has become an intricate psychological journey—one deeply rooted in students' aspirations, evolving identities, and subjective assessments of what education offers them, both tangibly and emotionally. This chapter unpacks the underlying psychological drivers that shape prospective students' decisions in selecting their educational paths. We explore how aspirations act as internal compasses, often shaped by familial narratives, media portrayals, and personal ambitions. Finally, we suggest how institutions can better align their communication and recruitment strategies with the authentic psychological realities of learners, advocating for more empathetic, student-centered approaches that move beyond surface-level marketing. Through this lens, we call for a reimagining of educational outreach—one that honors not just what students seek to become, but who they already are.
