Abstract

Higher education is undergoing rapid transformation due to technological innovation and demographic shifts. Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionising the sector by enabling personalised learning, improving enrolment methods, and facilitating data-driven decision-making. Meanwhile, demographic developments, such as declining student populations in developed regions and growing youth populations in areas like Sub-Saharan Africa, are altering global education demand. This systematic literature review explores the intersection of AI and demographic trends, identifying key themes, opportunities, and challenges in shaping the future of higher education. The review addresses two core questions: What global trends are influencing education, and how is AI reshaping higher education? The findings provide practical insights for educators, policymakers, and administrators seeking to harness AI for inclusive and sustainable educational systems.
