Smog, Energy Transition, and Sustainable Development
Abstract
Smog, a mixture of air pollutants, dust, and smoke coupled with fog under direct sunlight, significantly jeopardizes human health and the environment by diminishing visibility. Smog has emerged as an escalating global concern with significant repercussions for human health, ecosystems, and economies all around the world. It has also emerged has major issue for environmental sustainability, health and overall economic performance in Pakistan. The study's goal is to critically analyzed the interdependent issues of urban smog, energy transition, and sustainable development in Pakistan, with an aim to suggest an effective policy framework for climate-resilient urbanization. Hence, this paper proposes an integrated policy framework that aligns smog mitigation, energy transition, and sustainable urban development to ensure climate-resilient cities in Pakistan. This policy paper rigorously analyzes the systemic causes of smog, associating it with industrial emissions, automobile pollution, agricultural produce incineration, garbage combustion and inadequate urban design. Notwithstanding established legal frameworks, inadequate enforcement and bureaucratic inefficiencies intensify the situation. This report, informed by expert perspectives from the Pakistan Economics Frontier's World Energy Day event, advocates a comprehensive policy framework to alleviate smog via sustainable urbanization, energy transition, and regional cooperation. The suggested framework underscores legal reforms, technology advancements, and cohesive governance to tackle smog at its source. Essential interventions comprise the implementation of Euro 6 gasoline requirements, the transition to electric vehicles, the modernization of public transportation, and the enhancement of climate diplomacy. Investments in green infrastructure, such as sustainable urban planning, vertical gardens, and afforestation, are crucial for the effective long-term management of this issue. This study is consistent with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 7, 11, and 13) and promotes a policy approach that is grounded in evidence and data to improve climate resilience and reduce emissions. By Adopting renewable energy, green investment, stimulating multispectral. Reciprocity Pakistan can achieve environmental and economical sustainability.
