Abstract

This chapter examines the emerging phenomenon of social media-informed self-diagnosis of autism among children. It explores how mainstream and digital media shape autism narratives, with particular attention to the influence of online platforms, influences, and informal diagnostic discourses. Key themes include identity formation, ethical dilemmas, family and community responses, and the implications for occupational therapy (OT) practice. The chapter argues for a balanced approach that validates children's lived experiences while grounding interventions in evidence-based assessment and support. Finally, it outlines future directions for clinical practice, research, and policy, offering guidance to professionals navigating the intersection of digital culture and child development.
