Application of Play Therapy for Asian Children With ADHD
Abstract
This chapter explores the use of play therapy as an effective intervention for children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in Asian contexts. It highlights how culturally adapted play therapy models, such as Child-Centered Play Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy, Filial Therapy, and Theraplay support executive functioning, emotional regulation, and social development. The chapter also discusses ADHD prevalence, cultural perceptions, and barriers to treatment in countries like China, India, and Saudi Arabia. Emphasis is placed on the importance of cultural competence, parental involvement, and integration of traditional play methods. Research shows that culturally sensitive and developmentally appropriate play interventions are beneficial in improving outcomes for children with ADHD. The chapter advocates for greater recognition of play therapy in Asia and calls for more research, therapist training, and culturally grounded adaptations to expand access and effectiveness.
