Abstract

This chapter explores the multifaceted role of sports and structured physical activity in enhancing the developmental trajectories of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). ASD is a complex neurodevelopmental condition marked by deficits in social communication, restricted behaviors, and sensory integration challenges. While traditional interventions focus on behavioral and cognitive therapies, this chapter advocates for the integration of inclusive sports as a therapeutic and educational strategy. Special emphasis is placed on the neurobiological mechanisms, inclusive sports models, and the importance of structured versus unstructured play. The roles of physical educators, therapists, coaches, and families are critically examined, alongside systemic challenges such as accessibility and behavioral management. The chapter concludes with emerging trends in adapted sports, the integration of technology, and the imperative for long-term, outcome-based research.
