Music as a Therapeutic Tool
Abstract
This report discusses the therapeutic potential of music in neural rehabilitation, and its implications for psychological and physical treatment. Drawing from research in psychology and neuroscience, it explores how key elements of music, such as rhythm, melody, and harmony, interact with other neural networks to facilitate emotional, cognitive, and physical healing. By highlighting empirical studies which demonstrate music's interactions with the Default Mode Network and other neural networks, this report expresses the positive impacts this can have on self-awareness, memory, and emotional processing. The discussion also delves into the implications of music in regulating mood and physiological stress reactions by illustrating its ability to lower cortisol levels and heart rate through its relationship to subcortical brain regions. Music offers significant benefits across neuropsychiatric and physiotherapeutic applications, and as a cost-effective, accessible, and non-invasive therapeutic tool, has the potential to revolutionize the fields of neuroscience and psychology.
