Abstract

This study investigates the efficacy of the Realabilities Comic Book Series Curriculum in enhancing empathy and socio-emotional skills among third and fifth grade students. The study compares the curriculum's impact across different age groups in elementary education, focusing on knowledge acquisition, behavioral intentions, and attitudes toward peers with disabilities. Research suggests that significant cognitive and emotional developments occur during preadolescence, highlighting the importance of interventions that align with these milestones. The curriculum, which uses engaging comic book narratives to foster empathy and reduce bullying, was tested in two classrooms. Results indicated distinct outcomes between grades; third graders improved more in knowledge, while fifth graders exhibited greater attitude shifts toward less visible disabilities like ADHD and Autism. These findings suggest the curriculum positively influences social perceptions and interactions, crucial for socio-emotional growth. The chapter advocates for further research to be conducted.
