Abstract

The use of ChatGPT for academic purposes is increasing. However, the complexity of ChatGPT capabilities remains challenging from teaching and learning perspectives, for reasons such as: (1) the complexities of the capabilities are unknown; and (2) where the complexities are known, it is not clear how they manifest themselves. Thus, this chapter aimed to gain a deeper understanding of ChatGPT's capabilities from teaching and learning viewpoints. The qualitative method was followed. Existing materials were gathered from several sources and used as data. The interpretive approach, guided by the translation concept from actor-network theory (ANT), was applied for the analysis of the data. From the analysis, four capabilities of ChatGPT were revealed: text generation, creative writing, personalised tutoring, and enhanced writing. From the context and relevance perspectives, the capabilities manifest into engagement, innovation, interaction, and academic writing, and cognitive reasoning, enhanced teaching and learning, facilitation, and content generation, respectively.
