Abstract

This chapter presents the issue of applying virtue ethics to AI-powered education systems, with the main idea deriving that artificial intelligence should promote not only the intellectual but also the moral development. It suggests a virtue-based model based on the postulates of Aristotle about eudaimonia that develops intellectual virtues (i.e., curiosity, critical thinking, perseverance) along with the moral virtues of social responsibility, empathy, and fairness. The chapter shows, through theoretical consideration, how AI can aid ethical interaction, train moral dilemmas, and develop civic-mindedness. It apprehensively discusses the dilemma of value misalignment, biases intensification, and monitoring, promoting the co-development of humans and AI, ethical leadership, and design culture. It ends the chapter with several policy-reforming and design suggestions to guarantee that AI in education does not make students into merely competent citizens, but caring, socially robust ones.
