Abstract

In this chapter, I invite the reader into a process of exploration where they can reflect on their understanding of person-centered planning, advising, supported decision-making, and the ways these tools can be integrated in IPSE programs. Just as in the appreciative advising process, the chapter is structured by the touchstones of Disarm, Discover, Dream, Design, Deliver, and Don't Settle. I will share how my work with students with ID has grown and shifted over the past decade as a way to describe and model the challenges and possibilities of working in this space. I hope readers will engage actively with the content in order to consider where the spaces to grow their own advising practice might be. I do this to encourage, challenge, and inspire the next generation of leaders in IPSE programs, and because students with ID deserve our best as they work toward self-determination.
