Abstract

One promising strategy to address a dearth of un- and under-employment for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) is the development of postsecondary education (PSE) programs for adults with IDD. Job coaching is a key component in many PSE programs, playing a critical role in supporting successful employment outcomes for individuals with IDD. This chapter will explore the essential role of integrating job coaching into PSE programs to support students with IDD as they transition into the workforce. It also presents a case study that highlights the use of the Extended Job Coaching Model, which provides continuous, wrap-around support to students both during their time in the program and up to five years after graduation. This Extended Job Coaching Model is designed to empower graduates in their pursuit of career advancement, whether they are seeking promotions with their current place of employment or exploring opportunities in new work environments.
