Abstract

This chapter explores the lived experiences of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) enrolled in inclusive postsecondary education (IPSE) programs, focusing on their perspectives related to social engagement, friendships, and overall quality of life. Through a qualitative interview-based study, the chapter elevates student voices to understand how inclusion in the academic and social fabric of college life shapes their identity, growth, and future aspirations. Findings from interviews (n = 6) reveal seven overall themes: Independence and Life Skills; Friendships and Social Belonging; Helping and Contributing; Vocational Identity; Navigating Challenges; Pride and Identity Formation; and Structured Support and Routine. The implications highlight the necessity of student-centered program development to promote equitable outcomes in higher education.
